Are you more of a pancake or waffle person? I'm usually reaching for the waffles! They're one of my favorite sweet breakfast foods. In college, our food hall had "Waffle Wednesdays" that I could never miss, and I'd always bring my own chocolate chips to top them with! However, if you consider yourself more of a pancake person, try my Cinnamon Honey Pancake recipe!
Plus, Leslie Knope loves sweet Belgian waffles and you can't celebrate Galentine's Day on February 13th without them! They're definitely acceptable for dinner on this holiday (and any other day, if you ask me)!
These easy Belgian waffles are so quick to make and the topping options are endless! What more could you ask for in a breakfast dessert? I knew I had to make my own version, and I must say, these are the best homemade waffles I have ever had!

Why You'll Love This Recipe
- The Belgian waffle batter recipe only uses 10 ingredients, most of which are pantry staples.
- All you'll need is a bowl and a waffle iron to make this fluffy Belgian waffle recipe.
- From start to finish, you'll have perfect waffles in about 20 minutes!
- The topping choices are endless! I love spreading Biscoff cookie butter, Trader Joe's lemon curd, and Bonne Maman's raspberry jam onto different sections of the warm waffle!
- You can store them in the freezer to always have frozen waffles on hand!
Ingredients
- Baking powder and baking soda create extra fluffy waffles.
- Milk and sour cream add richness to the batter. I recommend using whole fat for both of these ingredients.
- Vegetable oil is used to keep the waffles nice and moist.
- Vanilla extract is the main flavoring.
See recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.
Substitutions & Variations
- Add your favorite toppings to these sweet waffles. Try different fruits, maple syrup, powdered sugar, whipped cream, cookie butter, lemon curd, jam, chocolate chips, etc!
- For homemade chocolate chip waffles, fold mini chocolate chips (measure with your heart) into the batter along with the dry ingredients.

How to Make Belgian Waffles
Step 1: In a large bowl, whisk together the all purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, granulated sugar, and salt.
Step 2: In a separate bowl, mix the egg, milk, sour cream, oil, and vanilla extract together.
Step 3: Stir the wet ingredients into the dry mixture until just combined. It's okay if there are some clumps in it!
Step 4: Cook the batter in a greased, preheated waffle maker until golden and crisp on the edges.
Expert Baking Tips
- Preheat your waffle maker while you whip up the batter so it's ready to go right away!
- Don't overfill your waffle maker or it will overflow and create quite a mess.
- If you are making a lot of waffles, you can keep them warm in the oven on a sheet pan while you cook the rest of the batter. Set your oven to "keep warm" or its lowest temperature.
Recipe FAQs
What's the difference between Belgian waffles and regular waffles?
Belgian waffles are typically thicker with deeper pockets and lighter and crisper than traditional waffles.
Which waffle maker should I get?
There are lots of great waffle makers in the market! I recommend finding one that is heavy and has either cast iron or non-stick grates.
Why are my waffles sticking to the iron?
This is likely because the iron wasn't greased enough before the batter was poured in. Waffle makers are tricky because you have to make sure they're greased well and deep in the crevices!
Storage
Room Temperature
Homemade waffles are best served right away, but can be stored in an airtight container on the counter for 1-2 days.
Refrigerator
Store in the refrigerator for up 3days.
Freezing Instructions
Make these waffles ahead of time! Store cooled waffles in a freezer bag and freeze for up to 1 month. Place directly in a toaster to reheat. If the waffles are too big for your toaster, I recommend breaking them up before freezing them.
